Symposium Venue

The symposium takes place at the Van Swieten Hall of the Medical University of Vienna, which is located close to Vienna’s famous “Ring Street” and the city center.

Travel in / to Vienna

From Vienna International Airport

Vienna International Airport is about 20 km from the city centre of Vienna, which can easily be reached by Airport Bus Shuttle, regional train (S-Bahn) or CAT (City Airport Train):

  • Airport Bus Shuttle
    Buses of the Vienna Airport Lines (VAL) go from the airport to (and vice versa):

    • Wien Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (connection to undergrounds U1 and U4)
    • Wien Dörfelstrasse/Meidling (connection to underground U6)
    • Wien Westbahnhof (connection to undergrounds U3 and U6)

      At the airport the bus station is directly in front of the arrival hall. Buses leave every 20 to 30 minutes. Tickets (€10.50 single-way, 17.50 incl. return ticket) can be bought on the bus, from the ticket vending machines or online. Tickets are only valid for the shuttle bus, not for public transport within Vienna (see below)!

  • Regional Train by ÖBB (Schnellbahn/”S-Bahn”)
    Follow the ÖBB train signs in the airport arrival hall to get the “S-Bahn” line S7 or REX7, which take you to the the city center within ca. 25 minutes. At the train stop “Wien Mitte/Landstrasse” you can change to the underground lines U3 and U4, or a stop further at “Praterstern” you can change to the underground lines U1 and U2.

  • City Airport Train (CAT)

    The CAT line takes you to Vienna city center (“Wien-Mitte/Landstrasse”, connection to undergrounds U3 and U4) non-stop in 16 minutes. Tickets are valid only for the CAT, not for the public transport within Vienna. Combined tickets, however, are available at the vending machines or online.

From the railway stations

Vienna is well connected to the international rail network. International trains arrive either at Wien Hauptbahnhof or Wien Westbahnhof. From there you can take the underground, buses and/or trams. See Train route planner.


Wien Hauptbahnhof to Van Swieten Saal
Take underground U1, direction Leopoldau. At stop Karlsplatz change to tram 1, 71, D or UZ2. Get off at stop Schottentor-Universitaet (University main building) (approximately 15 minutes). Alternatively you can take the tram D, direction Nußdorf. Get off at stop Schottentor (University main building). From there it is either a 13 minutes walk or you take tram 40 or 42 and get off at Schwarzspanierstrasse.  


Wien Westbahnhof to Van Swieten Saal
Take underground U3, direction Simmering. At stop Volkstheater change to tram 1, 71, D or UZ2. Get off at stop Schottentor-Universitaet. From there it is either a 13 minutes walk or you take tram 40 or 42 and get off at Schwarzspanierstrasse.


Wien Mitte/Landstraße to Van Swieten Saal
Take the underground U4, direction Heiligenstadt. At stop Schottenring change to underground U2, direction Karlsplatz. Get off at stop Schottentor-Universitaet (University main building) (approximately 10 minutes). From there it is either a 13 minutes walk or you take tram 40 or 42 and get off at Schwarzspanierstrasse.


Public Transport in Vienna

Vienna has an efficient public transportation system. You can easily purchase tickets at the ticket machines in Vienna or online, which are valid on all transportation means within the Vienna city boundary (buses, trams, undergrounds, S-Bahn).


The 48h or 72h Vienna tickets (€14.10 or €17.10, respectively) are economic ways of moving around in Vienna.

Tickets can be bought online or from vending machines at underground stations.


For those who plan to do some sightseeing as well, the Vienna Card might be interesting. It is also valid for 72 hours for the entire public transportation system and entitles you to reduced rates when visiting museums, exhibitions, etc. You can buy the Vienna Card at the airport, in most hotels or order it online.
