Science Outreach: Our lab course for high school classes

After very positive feedback for our lab course “Trash or Treasure: Protein Recycling in the Cell” in 2023, the Vienna Open Lab is offering another Special Event Week, providing all their capacity to offer this course for a week in November 2024. Once more, the demand is overwhelming.

Previously, the Bachmair lab from our Special Research Program in collaboration with the Vienna Open Lab designed a lab course for high school pupils on the topic of targeted protein degradation. After overwhelming demand and very positive feedback from the approximately 300 participating pupils in total in 2023, the Vienna Open Lab is offering another “Special Event Week” in November 2024, where their entire capacity is devoted for holding our course “Trash or Treasure? Protein Recycling in the Cell” (held in German “Alles Müll? Proteinrecycling in der Zelle”). Once more, the demand is overwhelming: Applications were more than double the capacity.

Special thanks go to our SFB researchers Prof. Andreas Bachmair (Max Perutz Labs), Dr. Nikola Winter (former SFB member in the Bachmair lab) and Dr. Caroline Saad (current SFB member of the Bachmair lab) for designing the course and providing their expertise, and to the Vienna Open Lab for the excellent collaboration implementing the course.

We are planning to offer further courses in 2025. Further information for interested school classes will be announced in time by the Vienna Open Lab.
